Self Drive

Public transport is limited throughout the Daintree region, so we highly recommend hiring a car and self driving so you can have the freedom to explore the rainforest at your own pace. Most of the attractions and activities are well spread out between the Daintree River and Cape Trib Beach, as are dining options, so hiring a vehicle will provide you with greater flexibility to get the most from your stay. Most roads are sealed, so unless you are planning to go to Cooktown via the Bloomfield Track, you will not need a 4WD to visit the Daintree. Drive time from Cairns to Cape Triibulation is two and a half hours, and one and a half hours from Port Douglas. The journey to the Daintree is all part of this unique and special experience. The Cook Highway from Cairns to Mossman is one of the most beautiful coastal roads in Australia, with secluded palm fringed tropical beaches, hidden coves, rugged headlands, rich green sugar-cane fields and rainforest covered mountains...

Mossman

The sugar town of Mossman lies just 20 minutes north of Port Douglas. The town was built around the Mossman Sugar Mill (established in 1894), and is now the region's sugar capital that hums its way through cane crushing season (June-October). Mossman is also well known as the gateway to the refreshing and beautiful Mossman Gorge. This very accessible and scenic section of the World Heritage listed Daintree National Park is well worth a visit. Here the Mossman River tumbles its way over huge granite boulders that line the gorge, creating cool clear freshwater swimming holes. Follow along rainforest tracks, cross the suspension bridge and take the 2.7 kilometre rainforest loop trail.

Daintree Village

A short 30 minute drive north of the Mossman Gorge is the Daintree Village, on the southern banks of the Daintree River. Daintree Village is known for its unique bird life and crocodile spotting tours. The Village hosts a number of restaurants, galleries and shops selling local arts and craft. Low-impact tourism, sustainable cattle and tropical fruit-farming in the beautiful valleys beyond the Village form the lifeblood of this laid-back little township.

Daintree Ferry

The north and south banks of the Daintree River are linked by the Daintree Ferry. The Daintree ferry is the only cable ferry operating within tropical Australia. It makes continuous crossings of the Daintree River throughout the day, which takes about 5 minutes to cross the river. A fee is payable to use the ferry service prior to boarding. The ferry operates 6.00am until midnight every day with a reduced service on Christmas Day. After crossing the Daintree Ferry you will travel through lowland and tropical rainforest passing road junctions for Cape Kimberley and Cow Bay.

Alexandra Lookout

Mount Alexandra Lookout, or Walu Wugirriga (“look about”), is situated about 5 km north of the Daintree River. Visitors are treated to a stunning view of the Mount Alexandra foothills, Cape Kimberley, Snapper Island, and the mouth of the Daintree River and Low Isles in the distance. It is an ideal spot for those postcard photo opportunities.

Cow Bay

Cow Bay is located halfway between the Daintree River and Cape Tribulation, and offers a great beach and rainforest experience. Cow Bay Beach is one of the most beautiful and remote beaches in the Daintree area. Accessed via the Cow Bay Road; there is a car park
and picnic area at the end. Trees hug the shoreline, providing a perfect spot to relax, enjoy a picnic and let the kids play. Within the Cow Bay locality you will find a pub, Floravilla Ice Cream Factory, a small art gallery, Crocodylus Village budget accommodation and the world renowned Daintree Discovery Centre.

Thornton Beach

Thornton Beach is a pretty beach that you can spot amongst the trees from the road. This is the only beach with a cafe right on the beachfront, so it is the perfect oppotunity to enjoy some lunch or a coffee and then go for an explore. A short walk down the beach
to the mouth of Cooper's Creek will reveal the stunning views of Thornton's Peak - Queensland's third highest mountain. The picturesque backdrop of Struck Rock (offshore from the beach) adds to the experience of this lovely stretch of coast line.

Cape Tribulation Beach

The best part of the Cape Tribulation experience is the beaches. Most of the beaches in the Daintree region are untouched with golden sand, fringing reef and rugged rainforest that frames the coastline. Cape Tribulation Beach is a popular spot for visitors and the view says it all... A short 10 minute walk up to the headland opens up a breathtaking view of rainforest clad mountains which literally roll down to meet with the fringing reef. Cape Tribulation Beach has toilets and picnic tables, keep a watch out for Lace monitors (goannas) as they are often seen patrolling for food scraps.

Self Drive Activities

There are many activities in the rainforest to choose from that are focussed on providing a true ecotourism experience, they also make for a magical day out.  Choose from adventure activites such as the Jungle Canopy Surfing. Here you can zip through the rainforest on flying fox ziplines, stopping at 5 tree platforms to take in spectacular bird’s eye views over the treetops. It provides a unique and exhilarating way to experience the beauty of the world-renowned Daintree Rainforest. More relaxed scenic self drive options include a Daintree River Cruise onboard the Crocodile Express, a visit to the Daintree Discovery Centre or a guided rainforest wilderness walk with Cooper Creek Wilderness. Experience the grandeur and awe-inspiring beauty in the Daintree’s most spectacular fan palm dominated rainforest, on a natural walking trail in a small, exclusive group. Cooper Creek Wilderness welcomes genuine travellers who want to experience the most significant portion of the Daintree Rainforest in the Cape Tribulation section of this World Heritage Area. Rainforest in this area is estimated to be over 170-million years old.
